The 2024 P1 registration has started. For parents who are fretting about which school is best to send their child to, we’ve put together a nifty checklist of things to look out for to streamline the admission process. Singapore uses a phased registration system. Earlier phases prioritise children who have certain connections to the school.

There are 2 things that can provide increased priority during the Registration Phases:

1) Residence

This is a big factor. Living within 1km of the school grants the highest priority for Singaporean Citizens (SCs).

Primary schools that see an abundance in registrants vs available vacancies will give out spots according to the applicant’s citizenship and the Home-School Distance category, which is determined by the address that was provided during registration.

In accordance with the Ministry Of Education (MOE), priority admission is given in this order:

  • SCs living within 1km of the school.
  • SCs living between 1km and 2km of the school.
  • SCs living outside 2km of the school.
  • Permanent Residents (PR) living within 1km of the school.
  • PRs living between 1km and 2km of the school.
  • PRs living outside 2km of the school.

2) School Ties

Having an older sibling in the school (Phase 1) or being an alumni can improve your chances in Phase 2A. You may also be able to improve your child’s admission chances by volunteering at the particular primary school you wish for them to attend. (Phase 2B)

In addition to the school’s ranking and school distance, parents should also keep in mind other varying factors when choosing a school.

Child’s Needs & Interests

It is important to choose a school with a learning environment that aligns with your child’s strengths and interests. Some schools are known for being more progressive or traditional in their approach. While this may suit a certain child’s learning style, it might not suit your child’s. Research into a school’s teaching philosophy and see if it aligns or clashes with your child’s learning capabilities.

Different schools offer a differing range of CCAs, find a school with a strong CCA program that can cater to your child’s interests. If your child has expressed a certain interest, CCAs can be a good way for them to further develop these skills in a structured environment. On the flip side, if they haven’t yet found a niche, CCAs can help them develop new skills and discover new passions.

Joining a CCA is also a good way to make friends who share similar interests and form lifelong bonds with people in a shared environment. Researching the types of CCAs offered and the success of the programs can give you a well-rounded picture of the school’s offerings.

School Culture & Affiliation

Research the school’s approach to learning, extracurricular activities, and any affiliations with secondary schools.

By prioritising these factors alongside distance and ranking, you can create a shortlist of schools that best suit your child’s individual needs and pave the way for a successful and fulfilling primary school experience.

Below are some primary schools that are renowned for their academic achievements, commitment to holistic student development, and strong reputations in the educational community.
